IT Manager Careers Tend to Stall in Small Enterprises, Says Info-Tech Research Group

For IT professionals, the "big fish, small pond" analogy does not hold true. In smaller enterprises, decisions on IT department acquisitions tend to rest in the hands of senior, non-IT executives, according to market research by Info-Tech Research Group's Indaba Division. "In companies with more than 200 employees, the balance of power shifts and more than 50 per cent of purchase decisions are made by executives in the IT group," said Ed Daugavietis, senior research analyst with Info-Tech.

As a result, IT managers seeking careers with major impact on a business should focus on companies with 200 or more employees.

On the flip side, Daugavietis said that small enterprises may offer an ideal experience for the IT professional who enjoys hands-on management of the IT infrastructure and does not apsire to management.

"But for those wanting to progress to departmental management or becoming CIO, moving to a larger business is the obvious choice," said Daugavietis.

Info-Tech's Indaba Division has surveyed 4,000 Small/Medium enterprises this year. Indaba's research role is to provide tactical, practical, go-to-market advice to suppliers of IT products and services.
